Umhausen
At the heart of Ötztal
Silence and idyll, culture and tradition. In addition, nature that not only takes your breath away symbolically. The hospitable village of Umhausen in Central Ötztal with its hamlets of Tumpen, Köfels and Farst offers all of this. Discover “Ötzi’s” prehistoric home, Tirol’s largest waterfall: the relaxing effect of wonder. In winter you will immerse yourself in deep tranquility on foot or on cross-country skis.
Umhausen
Umhausen is Ötztal’s oldest settlement. We have summarized four of the special attractions under the slogan “Umhausen places of strength”. These include the open-air Ötzi Village archaeological park that recreates everyday life of our ancestors. Right next door you will find the Ötztal Birds of Prey Park with the opportunity to admire spectacular flight shows (open from spring to autumn).
The idyllic Umhausen natural swimming lake offers refreshment in clear drinking water (for more choice, we still recommend a visit to the local restaurants). A little further, the mighty Stuiben Falls can be heard from far, with a height of 159 m it is Tirol’s largest waterfall. Thanks to 700 steps, 5 viewing platforms and a suspension bridge, you can get up close and personal with the natural spectacle.
Tumpen
The hamlet of Tumpen at the entrance to the village of Umhausen demonstrates the elemental power of the Alps. The Tumpen waterfall, the legendary Engelswand rock face, countless chapels, the mighty "Achplatte" and "Achstürze" rockslide areas are a perfect prelude to the region’s many lasting impressions in the region.
Köfels
Surrounded by meadows and forest, the small rural hamlet nestles on a sun-kissed plateau at 1,400 m. A geological peculiarity of Ötztal is revealed here: the “Köfels rockslide” was the largest mass movement in the Alpine region some 8,000 years ago. With a bit of luck, molten rock, so-called “Köfelsit” (pumice-like rock), can still be found on the roadside today.
Farst
The ancient settlement above the legendary Engelswand rock face is as far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life as the moon. You should plan around 60 minutes for the climb up the steep hairpin bends. But you will be rewarded by fabulous panoramic views and warm hospitality at the snack station serviced at year round.
