Good planning is half the battle!

Depending on which hikes are on your to-do list, your luggage may vary, of course. Single-day hikes, multi-day tours with hut stays, or high-altitude tours with climbing sections all require different equipment. There is no single universal hiking packing list. We provide you here with a “hiking vacation packing list" as detailed as possible, but don’t forget: You may be able to leave something out or need to add more.

  • Depending on the terrain: hiking shoes, hiking or mountain boots, or trekking shoes

  • Hiking poles

  • Trekking pants (optional with zip-off feature)

  • Short trekking pants & rain pants (optional)

  • Functional underwear

  • Fleece pullover or softshell jacket

  • Wind- and water-resistant jacket

  • Hiking socks

  • Sunglasses

  • Cap or sun hat

  • Face protection for cold temperatures (buff or neck gaiter)

  • Hiking backpack for day or multi-day tours (including rain cover)

  • Maps (digital or printed)

  • Cash (most huts only accept cash)

  • Insulated water bottle (for day hikes approx. 1-1.5 liters)

  • Snacks like energy bars, dextrose, fruit, or sandwiches (depending on the duration of the hike)

  • Headlamp including spare batteries

  • Charged smartphone (including charger; possibly an additional spare battery or power bank)

  • Thermal seat pad for breaks (optional)

  • Sunscreen

  • Blister plasters / small first aid kit

  • Personal medications (e.g. for allergies)

  • Pain and fever medications

  • Diarrhea or stomach remedies

  • Sunscreen and lip protection

  • Toiletry bag for multi-day hikes with hut stays

  • Travel towel

  • Plastic bag for dirty laundry (optional)

  • Mosquito and tick repellent

  • Oral hygiene items (toothpaste & co.)

  • Personal care products (shower gel, deodorant, etc.)

  • Passport or ID card

  • Insurance or travel insurance proof

  • Driver's license (international, if needed)

  • Debit or credit card

  • Vaccination card

  • Visa (if required)

  • Accommodation booking confirmation (if needed)

  • List of important emergency contact numbers

  • Pen and notebook (optional)

  • Pocket knife

  • Lighter and matches

If you plan to hike more challenging routes, you should thoroughly research the trail. Additional equipment like a helmet, harness, crampons, or rope may be necessary. If it's your first time on a technically demanding tour, we recommend doing the tour with a mountain guide! This ensures maximum safety, and you can learn a few tricks from a professional.
