Myth-enshrouded mountain farms

2 km above Vent, at 2,011 m altitude, Austria’s highest permanently settled mountain farms defy the harsh conditions. According to legend, in the 15th century the farms served as a place of refuge for Friedrich IV, Archduke of Tirol, also known as Friedl of Empty Pockets. In 1940, the farms were one of the locations for a film adaptation of the regional novel “Die Geier-Wally”.

The idyllic location, the traditional inn and the famous Haflinger breeding make the Rofenhöfe Farms a popular excursion destination that can be easily reached on foot. Already in the 13th century shepherds are said to have settled in this place, which is closely linked to the history of the Klotz family who still live here. A certain Leander Klotz made the first ascent of Wildspitze peak in 1848. Glacier priest Franz Senn trained him and his brother Nikodemus to become mountain guides.
